Theta Gamma chapter was colonized at Christopher Newport University in the Fall of 2003. Women who were interested in founding a sorority attended information sessions with national representatives. The candidates went through rigorous interviews to prove that they were capable of laying the foundation for a strong sorority.

In order to be chartered, the women had to achieve a membership of 50 women. Recruitment lasted through spring semester until this goal was met. Founding sister Laura Vico recalls, “We must have had ten Phoenix (pinning) Ceremonies that semester. Seriously, there was one every week.”

The chapter was installed on March 20, 2004 at the Omni Hotel in Newport News. Initiation was held in the morning, followed by a banquet dinner and formal dance. Sisters who were initiated that day had national representatives as sponsors for initiation, an experience that few sisters from other chapters will ever have.

Founding sisters wear a phoenix pin in addition to their membership badge. This pin symbolizes the effort that they have put forth in founding a new chapter of the sorority.
